How this guild came to be is very complex, so hang in there,
here we go!In 1996, several of our tribe members were attending
renaissance faires at Fresno city college and Hanford. In
those days, there was still open space on the lawn areas to have
an impromptu drum circle with all types joining in for fun and
dance.
Proudly, the faires have grown, all space to encampments and
venders, as it should be. Our turning point came 4 years ago, when
portable classrooms were set up in the middle of the Fresno
Community College faire space. We went to faire, as always ,set up
a drum circle. Due to the lack of space, and permanent set
up spots being re routed due to construction, we were a bit in the
middle of things.
The popularity of drum circles was at a high.....bottom line,
we drew a crowd of over 100...........great for all involved, bad
for the set up of the faire.
NOW a very important person in our guilds life stepped in
,Michel Butler. I have had a pleasant relationship with this
special man for years, we wont say how far back! LOL! He realized
we were authentic, no "canned music", period costuming as best we
could and still do our art, we had appeal, drew a great crowd.
He asked if we would let him help us form a formal guild ,so all
interested in this would have a "home" at faire. So, here we
are today, 60+ ....strong as ever, named after my father whose
Moorish/Spanish blood runs in my veins.....in his honor...we are
ZAMORA'S GYPSIES.
We are a bit eclectic, but so are gypsies. We pride our selves in
our divisiveness, and superior standards of our art......we
welcome all. Our children join us....they also have their own mini
camp next to out big tent, to suit their needs, under the
direction of Gay Marie, our gifted childrens' teacher. Most of our
agency pros take part in the shows and take pride in
working with the up and comings... We hold work shops to teach
what we do not know or teach... We are a happy, non snobby lot...
come join the fun, if you have dreams of gypsies!
