Bellydancing
I have been interested in dancing from a very young age, and have
been searching for the type of dance that most appeals to me. Iv found
it in bellydancing. I took gymnastics lessons when i was four, and
ballet and tap from ages 9-12. Neither of those types of dancing was
easy for me, or inspired me to try to "tell a story" with my body. I
decided to start going to renaissance faires, and there i saw different
types of live shows, and all different types of dancing. I was hooked.
In 1995, I began taking English Country dancing and Morris dancing
lessons, and preforming at renaissance faires with Red Dragon, and later
with St. Bacchus. It was at a renaissance faire here in the local valley
in 1997, where i saw Cory Zamora preform for the first time. I was
ENCHANTED, and made a point to watch Cory Zamora and Zamoras Gypsies
whenever I had a chance. In 2000, I approached her at a renaissance
faire, and she gave me a card, and within a week I called her to
schedual my first lesson.
Since then, Iv taken bellydancing lessons, and I finally feel like Iv
found a dance that I connect with. I can express myself with it, with
ease and pleasure, and tell a story to people. Theres so much emotion in
bellydancing, its a new dance everytime. I love it so much, its kept me
healthy and made me a better person. A long time ago, I heard Cory say
to somone "Each new dance is a prayer", and I'd have to agree, it's a
perfect description of what it feels like to dance. I hope everyone gets
to try or see bellydancing someday. If they don't, they're missing out
on a whole new world.
