About
Jim Karagozian
|
Jim
and Cory first met in the seventies at the opening of the
Peach and Shaw shopping center in Clovis, California. The
grand opening had a Middle Eastern theme complete with
Zamora's tribe performing and a belly dance contest judging
open to the public.
This chance meeting grew into a five-year run at the legendary
Tower District venue Wild Blue Yonder. There, belly dancing
was booked two Tuesdays a month by Zamora's agency.
Jim went on to play many other Middle Eastern musical
functions, from weddings and parties to cafés and
restaurants. He, along with a small combo, was featured
regularly at La Maison Du Café in Fresno. Jim also performs
with many world-renowned artists, including famed oudist
Richard Hagopian.
Jim now plays kanun in the Middle Eastern combo known as
Mirage, performing selections of Armenian, Turkish, Greek and
Arabic music. Jim is joined in the band by his brother, Ed
Karagozian, on doumbek and by Michele Awad on derbekki. They
are often accompanied by Jeffrey Armen, an outstanding oudist
from Phoenix, Arizona. This group frequently plays for Cory
and her tribe in the Central Valley. The band itself is
active in and around the Fresno and Bay areas.
