About Sue

Hi

I'm Sue Lyon Beevers who dances as Zara. I specialize in "Belly Dance for Exercise," but true to my Celtic roots, am an avowed eclectic.

I came to the dance first to straighten out my spine, and have continued to study belly dance as a positive and joyous way to heal crooked bones, stiff joints, body image, and as a means to reintegrate communication between the left and right brain. "Joyous" and healing crooked bones sounds like a natural oxymoron, but belly dancing is a very unique art form. It does heal you effortlessly while you're having fun!

I came to the dance through music. I was studying Celtic fiddle, song and dance, and wanted to diversify into a form of international dance that was more joint-friendly. In middle Eastern music I found such a diversity and feast of rhythm, melody and harmony! Where else but belly dancing can you combine healing with playing an instrument (zils), being an instrument yourself, creating visual harmonies by moving different parts of your body to different parts of the music, and having either an athletic or a strengthening or an emotional or a meditative or a dramatic experience?

Cory Zamora is a trained musician as well as athlete and dancer, and so adds that to her expertise as a performer, teacher, and troupe leader.

I first performed with Zamora's Company in 1978 or 79. (Please, do the math! Belly dancing prevents aging too!) I am happy to be working with her again in shows and showcases!
